Learn About Dementia

Dementia is not a disease itself but a word used to describe a group of symptoms that characterize certain diseases and conditions. Dementia is a global term used to describe a loss of intellectual functioning severe enough to interfere with day-to-day activities.  There are over 60 types of dementia.  Dementia is not a normal part of aging.  In different types of dementia, functioning may impaired in the following areas:
  1. memory, both long and short term
  2. reasoning
  3. judgment (including personal safety)
  4. insight into deficits
  5. abstract thinking
  6. orientation
  7. language and speech
  8. difficulty performing routine tasks
  9. learning new tasks
  10. motor planning
  11. tolerance for frustration
  12. personality changes
  13. decision-making ability
  14. decreased awareness of personal needs (toileting, bathing, dressing, etc.)
