Dementia
care requires a programming approach different from those at traditional
assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
The Arbor Springs social program is active seven days a week, 15
hours a day. This enables the flexibility to provide each resident
with the amount of stimulation for their particular stage in the
disease.
Arbor Springs activities promote self-esteem and self-worth by building
on a resident's abilities. They include:
- Social activities – Visits with loved ones and children,
and outings
- Spirituality – Visits by clergy, devotions, and
church services
- Music and art – Small group sessions and individual
creative projects
- Practical activities – Hobbies and familiar tasks
such as laundry and baking cookies
- Physical activities – Gardening and caring for plants,
pet therapy, and home chores
- Personal activities – Bathing, grooming and dressing,
and dining
- Wellness activities – Walking, movement groups, and
exercise in the Wellness Center
- Sensory activities – Tasting, touching, and listening
to soothing sounds of life
- Passive activities – Career and memory displays, and
a courtyard stroll
Resident relationships are also an integral part of the Arbor Spings
social program. Its care model includes learning about each resident's
life history, including family, career, hobbies and interests.
Resident histories are translated in several ways. Memory boxes filled
with personal mementos and photographs are posted beside each resident's
room so they can easily identify their home; life stations with rotating
displays are in each living room, and staff matches residents in similar
stages of the disease to socialize and reminisce together about their
lives.
